This dagger is rightly considered to be one of the most valuable pieces in the Hermitage Arsenal. Probably created in a northern Italian workshop, it is amazing in terms of its perfect decoration and elegance. The massive damascened blade is covered with the finest ornament in gold inlay, while the handle is carved of agate of rare beauty. The gilded silver mount of the sheath is decorated with chased images of scenes from Classical mythology. The dagger was acquired by Peter the Great for his Kunstkammer (Chamber of Curiosities) and later entered the Hermitage.
